Khao morĀ is the tradition of making miniature mountain for Gods to reside in, and first appeared in the 16th century during the Ayuthaya period. Khao (mountain) and mor (stone) is often used as an art practice in the palace, monastery and noble houses to serve different purpose.
Khao mor can represent a sacred mountain in Buddhism or Hinduism. It is also used as a miniature garden. In the old days, the landscape garden practice was unpopular in Siam (former name of Thailand) due to the seasonal floods, so khao mor became the solution for nature lovers to build a gardenscape above ground.
