An artwork by Wataru Hatano, The Accumulation of Time: Capturing Moments of the Past is a representative work the artist created by repeatedly layering materials mixed with Japanese paper, soil, and pigment. The layers of the materials give the work a heavy texture, and as the soil dries, the surface cracks, sometimes creating unexpected expressions. The act of simply layering the materials itself is also figurative, as it is a metaphor for the fact that his papermaking business exists within the long history of washi spanning 1,500 years, and that his current life in the countryside, which is connected to the workings of nature, is a page in a history that has been passed down for hundreds of years.
The work is also superimposed on the fact that it exists. "I would be happy if a viewer places this work in a space where he or she can imagine the depth of things that have accumulated over time, and the simple and beautiful scenery that has been stripped of useless things over the long accumulation of years," says Wataru Hatano.
