Know Your Asian Craft: Paper
May 20, 2022
A heritage craft, papermaking lives on as a specialised art of irreplaceable textures and stories.
Kauppila uses all traditional Chinese materials when creating her paintings. Works are done using traditional Chinese watercolor and Chinese inks, on painting-specific rice paper purchased in both Mainland China and in Hong Kong.
Once paintings are completed, they go through the traditional Chinese mounting process of using rice adhesive and a variety of traditional smoothing brushes to back the paintings onto a stronger rice paper base.
Kauppila works with a local Hong Kong family-operated Chinese mounting business to finalize and prepare the works before they are ready for framing, scanning, and printing.
