The Spotted Nyonya series is an industrial re-interpretation of Nyonya porcelain vessels which are traditional domestic wares native to Chinese-Peranakans in South East Asia.
An existing porcelain ware is subjected to the Resist Blast technique where parts of the original glaze are strategically removed to expose the white porcelain bisque beneath. The resulting effect is a bold contemporary dotted pattern juxtaposed on the multicolored surface of traditional peranakan motifs.
Spotted Nyonya won the distinction of “Les Découvertes” (Most Inventive Product Award) at the Fall Edition of Maison&Objet 2011 in Paris, and was awarded Design of the Year at the President's Design Award 2012. Particular pieces are in the permanent collection of the M+ Museum of Visual Culture, Hong Kong, Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, New York, and the National Collection, Singapore.
