Studio bwanji was established in 2005 by ceramic artist, Maiko Wakasugi. Based in the outskirts of Tokyo, Japan, the studio focuses on white porcelain tableware.
Maiko's specialty is making vessels on the pottery wheel using a translucent porcelain clay and a transparent glaze that is matte in appearance. To create a unique 'feel', she inlays many of her pieces with vertical stripes, crafting a simple design that is sure to stay timeless and functional throughout the years. Maiko skilfully molds porcelain, using plants as motifs to create striking designs with traditional techniques, details, and glaze textures.
After studying Ceramics in Seto, Japan, Maiko worked at a pottery studio to craft ceramic wall decorations for 2 years, after which she worked for environmental causes, as a potter in Zambia for 2 years.
