Talking Textiles: The View from the Outside
July 6, 2022
Each one a layered collage of inspired narratives, Deborah McKellar’s work is a tribute to the city of Singapore and ...
This artwork is traditional in it's subject matter, but the interpretation is more contemporary. This is seen in the loose line work, shown in the porcelain jar. The flower motifs accompanied with the jar tell a story, deeply rooted in the traditional shophouses of Singapore. Floral motifs are found in architectural elements of the shophouse, seen in both the Peranakan tiles and the plaster work. A contrast between warm and cool colors in the artwork is seen through the juxtaposition of both the jar and the flowers.
The fabric, which served as the inspiration for this piece, comes from the Designer Guild collection.
This canvas print is a digital reproduction of an original artwork by Deborah McKellar.
