Each of these ‘Little Chinese Windows’ depicts a curated vignette of objects arranged as a still life image with image details layered over the top.
Louise had photographed a stunning tea set depicting the famous Chinese ‘Willow’ pattern, yet in a beautiful dark red on cream instead of the predictable blue. An unashamedly feminine design, the teacups sit on delicate pink silk, bought from the Western Markets in Hong Kong, and have a puffy silk peony sitting inside them. The little red-feathered bird came from the bird & flower market, also in Hong Kong. The tea set was bought from an antique shop in Brooklyn and New York. The ‘Willow’ pattern although inspired by Chinese design was designed by two British men in 1780, potter Thomas Turner and engraver Thomas Minton.
