Camel, previously known as Wei Yit Vacuum Flask Mfy Ltd., was founded by the Leung family in 1940. Today, Camel is one of the oldest manufacturers of vacuum flasks and metalware in Hong Kong. Formerly ubiquitous around the city’s department stores, hardware shops, and F&B outlets, Camel is a true Hong Kong heritage brand.
In 1964, Camel became the first in Hong Kong to adopt 18/8 stainless steel to make double layer insulated containers, mainly supplied to hotels and caterers. During the 70s, on top of existing Southeast Asian business, Camel expanded to the US and European markets, working with local manufacturers and customizing for regional needs. In the early 80s, as production was facing a bottleneck, a larger factory in Kowloon Bay was built. Today, it stands tall as the Camlux Hotel. With China’s production power taking over the work in the 90s, Camel had to reposition their products in a saturated market.
The brand’s story mirrors Hong Kong through war, financial crises, and political uncertainties, reviving their vintage designs with time, while innovating with new technologies in order to better serve modern day lifestyle needs.
